Ervan (Daniel Jackson) is a character featured in Raven: The Dragon's Eye. He is a former soldier under Nevar's command, and offered help to Raven and his warriors reach the Dragon's Eye. Simultaneously, he was working to help Nevar achieve the same goal; however, in reality, Ervan wished to claim the Eye for himself.

Personality[]

His uncertain trustworthiness will ensure that Raven keeps constant vigilance over him and his warriors. It was thought in Episode 10 that Ervan showed his true colours by getting Nevar to assassinate Raven whilst he met the Spirit Lord, but Raven found out and threw Ervan back to his master.

Appearances[]

Early Life[]

Ervan was once a warrior - one of Nevar's soldiers who rode against Raven, likely in one of the battles for the Island of Alaunus. While a warrior, he once sought the Dragon's Eye and travelled through the Forgotten Kingdom, documenting his journey to the Eye and the challenges he faced along the way in The Journal. When he reached the Castle of Shadows, however, the gaze of the Dragon's Eye repelled him as he was not true of heart. Ervan managed to escape, stealing the Hanging Stones from the chamber of the Eye before leaving. He became the only warrior to ever manage to return from the Forgotten Kingdom (likely through the use of the hanging stones' teleportation powers). After returning, Ervan stayed in the Great Forest and made a life for himself as a woodsman, though still hoping to one day return to the Forgotten Kingdom to finally grasp the eye for his own.

Spirit Trials[]

Raven first met Ervan after he spotted him watching Raven talk to the warriors at the beginning of the Spirit Trials. Ervan explained that although he had once been a soldier in the employ of Nevar, he was dismissed from his service and now worked as a woodsman in the Great Forest. He said he wished to help Raven and the warriors in their quest to find the Dragon's Eye and defeat Nevar, his former master. He offered Raven some reward stones to help the team leaders and explained how they worked. Raven then asked Ervan to keep watch over Nevar. Although Raven was grateful for his help, he did not fully trust Ervan at first.

Ervan was then ambushed by demons while walking by the loch and taken to Nevar's encampment. Raven, however, "rescued" him from his former master. Ervan then thanked Raven for saving him and the two became friends. While walking in the forest, the two were ambushed by demons, which Ervan spotted before they had time to strike, allowing Raven to destroy them. Raven considered this a debt repaid and considered Ervan to be a trusted ally. Ervan then offered to help in keeping Nevar at bay while the warriors completed the Spirit Trials.

Ervan was then seen alongside Nevar, watching Raven speak to the warriors through the All Seeing Eye and discussed the setting of a trap for the warriors. While walking with Raven, Ervan then convinced him to fly to Nevar's encampment in the mountains and ambush him there. Though Raven was concerned about leaving the warriors, Ervan offered to help him by keeping watch over them. While Ervan was talking to the Wolves team after they completed The Chest, they were ambushed by demons and Nevar in the trap set the previous day. Raven then arrived just in time to battle Nevar so that Ervan could lead the warriors to safety, much to the dismay of Ervan. Nevar, enraged by the failure of this trap, became angry at Ervan, so Ervan offered to set another and be Nevar's eyes and ears in Raven's camp.

Raven then asked Ervan the meaning of the Hanging Stones, which he had spotted while walking through the forest. Ervan lied and said they were tribute stones left as thanks to the Tree Spirits and must be buried and returned to the forest. Raven then revealed that he had collected five, so Ervan, panicking, tried to convince Raven to bury them where they stood. This caused Raven to become wary and he was unconvinced by Ervan's lie. Raven's suspicions were further raised when, the next day, Ervan had a slip of the tongue and described the Dragon's Eye as a "yellow orb". This led Raven to ask the Spirit Lord whether anyone had returned from the Forgotten Kingdom - the Spirit Lord replied that only one person ever has but did not elaborate. Raven therefore started to suspect Ervan was said warrior.

The next day, Raven confronted Ervan about this and asked whether he had ever heard of a warrior who had returned. Ervan lied and said he had met him once but they passed the time of day and no more. He said that the perils beyond the barricade had been too much for him and he had returned a shell of a man and died soon after. Raven then said that he had initially thought the warrior to be Ervan, to which Ervan replied that he was a warrior no more and had no desire to travel to the Forgotten Kingdom as the warrior who had returned had spoken of the horrors that lay there.

Nevar then decided that he wanted to travel to the Forgotten Kingdom that day. Ervan, not possessing the hanging stones, tried to convince him to wait, but Nevar insisted, so Ervan set a plan to get the stones back from Raven.

After being questioned again by Raven about the warrior who returned and not divulging any information, Raven became angry and said he would ask the Spirit Lord at the Walking Tree. Ervan then hatched a plan to ambush him there. Raven did not show up as planned, however, and Nevar grew impatient and left. Ervan shouted after him, promising to deliver Raven to him. Just at that moment, Raven showed up and became angry with Ervan, throwing the Hanging Stones at him in a fit of rage, not knowing their power. After Raven left, Ervan then collected the stones and presented them to Nevar. He then sent a message to Raven, saying he only worked with Nevar so he could relay information to Raven, and that he would lead Nevar away from the forest, but Raven did not believe this excuse.

Ervan then opened a portal to the Forgotten Kingdom, using the Hanging Stones, for Nevar. This led Nevar straight to the eye, but, as Ervan had planned, Nevar was unable to grasp the eye and was captured by the Demons of the Eye. Ervan then tells Raven that he had lured Nevar away with false promises of glory elsewhere. Raven, however, still did not fully believe him.

Ervan then tried to speak with the Spirit Lord, telling him that he had found a way around their barricade and for them, this was the end. Ervan himself then used the hanging stones to pass through the portal into the Forgotten Kingdom. He revealed that his aim was to arrange events so that Raven and Nevar would destroy one another, leaving him free to take control of both their Kingdoms, and eventually, gain immortality and rule the entire world.

Forgotten Kingdom[]

While in the Forgotten Kingdom, Ervan worked with the Feral Leader to capture the warriors after they came through the portal. The tribe of feral children (who had attempted to get the Dragon's Eye, but had failed and were subsequently confined to eternity in the Forgotten Kingdom) captured the six warriors took them to Ervan, who sought to make the warriors fight for a leader. Meanwhile, on Ervan's instructions, Raven would be distracted by a fake trail left by the Feral Leader to lure him northwards to his death at the Castle of Shadows. When the warriors completed their leadership trials, Ervan gave them The Journal, a diary of a warrior who had ventured to the Dragon's Eye and lived to tell the tale (later revealed to be Ervan himself), guiding them to the Castle of Shadows and to the Eye.

He then told the warriors to go and rest for the night. After the warriors had gone inside a hut to rest, the feral children, on the Feral Leader's command barricaded the door and trapped them there. Raven arrived shortly after, having not been fooled by the fake trail. He ordered the warriors to be released and threatened to destroy Ervan. Ervan used the Feral Leader as a human shield, therefore Raven did not fire and merely warned him to never cross the warriors' paths again.

Ervan then watched the warriors' progress from afar. While walking through the Forgotten Kingdom, he was ambushed by Nevar who had escaped from the castle guards and was furious that he had been unable to lift the eye. Ervan, however, managed to convince Nevar not to destroy him, as only Ervan knew the whereabouts of the hanging stones and Nevar would never be able to leave the Forgotten Kingdom without Ervan's help.

The two then hatched a plan to steal Raven's staff - Ervan had made a copy using his skills as a woodsman. The next day, while the warriors were completing a challenge, Ervan called for Raven's help. Raven came to see what was happening and found Ervan being chased by Nevar. In the ensuing skirmish, Raven had to transform into his bird form to avoid a blast from Nevar's staff, leaving his own staff behind. As he flew away, Ervan quickly swapped Raven's staff with the copy and hid behind a tree. When Raven returned to collect his staff, it appeared no one was around and so he picked up the copy and left.

The two then planned to ambush Raven with his own staff but Raven angered Nevar by saying that Ervan was only using him to get to the eye. This led Nevar to attempt to strike Raven too early, so Raven was able to fly away. Raven later confronted Ervan within the Castle of Shadows and managed to get his staff back by deflecting Nevar's lightning at Ervan, however, Ervan was able to escape.

After Arkil managed to obtain the Dragon's Eye, she brought it out of the chamber so that Raven could destroy it. Before this could be done, Ervan appeared, armed with the hanging stones which had deadly explosive power in the presence of the Eye. He told Arkil to give him the Eye or he would strike. At this point, Nevar appeared behind him and, realising Ervan had never wanted to help him and wanted the Eye for himself, destroyed Ervan with his staff.

Despite his demise at the end of Raven: The Dragon's Eye, it is possible Ervan may return from the dead, as Nevar was shown to have done so.
